AI Backend Engineer
Build AI-Powered Backend Systems as our new AI Backend Engineer (Python/AWS)
If you’re ready to combine your expertise in backend engineering with the exciting world of AI, this is your chance. We’re building cutting-edge AI experiences for gamers, powered by a specialised domain LLM and agentic systems and we need your skills to make it happen.
How We Make an Impact
Gameopedia began with a simple mission: to be the ultimate gamer friend, helping gamers discover the best games with top-tier recommendations. Today, we deliver industry-leading video game data and insights to some of the world’s biggest companies, including Google, YouTube, Samsung, LG, and Amazon, shaping millions of gaming decisions globally.
As the global leader in game metadata, with metadata for more than 200K games, we are becoming an AI-first company — crafting advanced AI solutions that transform the gaming industry. At the heart of this is our domain-specific Gaming LLM and AI-driven services that power discovery, personalisation, and development.
How You’ll Make an Impact
As an AI Backend Engineer, you’ll design, build, and operate the services that make our AI experiences reliable, secure, and scalable. You’ll own production APIs, AWS infrastructure, and integrations with LLMs and agent frameworks — ensuring that our AI products run smoothly and cost-effectively in the real world.
What We Expect You to Do
- Backend & APIs:
Design and own Python microservices and APIs (FastAPI; GraphQL a plus).
Build event-driven and batch workloads (AWS Step Functions/EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Fargate, Lambda, S3).
Implement authentication/authorization (OIDC/OAuth2, JWT), request validation, rate-limiting, and guardrails.
Ensure reliability with observability tools (New Relic, logging, metrics, tracing, APM).
Write clean, well-tested, production-ready code.
- Cloud Architecture (AWS):
Ship with Infrastructure-as-Code (AWS CDK) and GitHub Actions for CI/CD.
Containerize and deploy services (Docker) on ECS Fargate/EKS; use Lambda where appropriate.
Design secure, scalable, cost-efficient architectures (VPC, ALB, NAT, private subnets, autoscaling).
Operate and optimize data/storage layers (Postgres/RDS/MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis, S3).
- AI/LLM & Agents:
Integrate our Gaming LLM and external providers (Gemini, OpenAI, MCP) with tool/function calling.
Build agent orchestration and safe tool execution (LangGraph, CrewAI, schema validation, guardrails).
Implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompt management, evaluation harnesses, caching.
Track and improve quality, latency, and cost; implement fallbacks, timeouts, and safety filters.
What We Think You’ll Need to Succeed
3–5 years building backend systems in Python; strong CS/engineering fundamentals.
3+ years designing and operating systems on AWS in production.
Proven experience shipping production APIs (FastAPI), with testing and observability.
Practical experience integrating LLMs or agents in real products (function calling, RAG, LangGraph/CrewAI, MCP).
Proficiency with Docker, GitHub Actions, and IaC (CDK).
Strong grasp of performance, resiliency, and security (IAM least privilege, networking, TLS).
Bonus XP (Nice-to-Haves)
GraphQL (Apollo) and async Python (uvicorn/asyncio) expertise.
MLOps familiarity (model packaging, registries, monitoring) and vector databases.
Experience with AWS cost/performance optimization.
Passion for video games and the gaming ecosystem.
